Female Kingfisher

Females lay up to ten eggs, about three of which will never hatch because she cannot cover them all for incubation to take place.
The young are raised on a pile of old fish bones in a filthy nest which is in a chamber at the end of a metre long, gently sloping tunnel.
They can have up to three broods a year.
